Description
Palau Sant Jordi is a famous multifunctional sports arena located in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Palau Sant Jordi was built in 1990 according to the design of the famous Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. The opening ceremony took place on September 21, two years before the 1992 Olympic Games, which took place in Spain and in this arena in particular.
The Palau Sant Jordi arena is considered an outstanding achievement of architecture and modern technology. During the construction of the power structure of the location, the most modern composite building materials were used to adapt the premises for a wide variety of events. In addition to hosting the 1992 Olympics, Palau Sant Jordi hosted the 1995 World Indoor Athletics Championships. In 1997, the arena hosted the European Basketball Championship.
Even though this location was originally intended to host basketball and athletics events, the arena hosted the 2003 World Aquatics Championships. A temporary control basin was installed especially for this event. It is noteworthy that ten years later Barcelona again became the venue for the World Aquatics Championships.
Also, the Palau Sant Jordi arena was chosen as one of the six locations where matches of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup were held.
